Also included in the festivities are the merry
makers of the ball, the Krewe of Cosmos “Jesters”. They work for
months learning a dance routine that is presented at that year’s pageant.
It is always a hilarious sight to watch. They visit local Nursing homes
the Sunday after the ball handing out beads, dancing with residence and
presenting there routine. The pageant is held the Saturday before Mardis
Gras at the Sulphur High Auditorium and it is free to the public.
Directly after the pageant members and their invited
guest attend the Krewe ball held at the Lake Charles Civic Center. It is
also decorated in the theme of the year by dedicated members. The King,
Queen and their court are again presented to the krewe members after which
a good time is had by all.
The Krewe
participates in Lake Charles’ annual Mardis Gras children's parade and the
Krewe of Krewe’s parade held on Mardis Gras day. They throw beads,
trinkets and candy to local parade goers.
In 1991, Bob Landry started a new Cosmos tradition by
walking in the parade by himself with a cane of flowers that he handed out
to lady’s along the route. This group became known as the Krewe of Cosmos “Walkers”. They walk along the parade route handing out beads and the
coveted Mardi Gras Flowers. Their cane of flowers are made of the Mardis
Gras colors of purple, green and gold and are handed out to lady’s of all
ages for a kiss on the cheek.
Other krewe activities during the year include the
parade barbeque held the morning of the parade. A membership party in the
fall, a farewell to the King, Queen and its Court held at the beginning of
Mardis Gras season and the annual Krewe Crawfish Boil held in the Spring. |
